Alcudia is located in the north of the Island and with its many beautiful beaches as well as its culture and history was once the capital of the Island in Roman times. Even today the old town retains its character set inside the walls of the old fort and located next to the ancient roman ruins. The municipality consists of three main areas the old town, Port Alcudia and the very popular tourist stretch called Playa de Muro.
The north of the Island has always been the preferred destination for birdwatchers and Alcudia a favourite choice to stay for many years especially now with its huge choice of accommodation which ranges from boutique hotels in the old town to the huge high rise hotels along the beach front at Playa de Muro. There are also some large holiday villages such as the Sea Club and the Club Blue Sol known to many as the Club Pollentia. There is no doubt that Alcudia provides some of the best places to eat on the Island as well as the largest selection of hotels in the north of the Island.
With the amount of good birdwatching close by a lot of UK tour companies specialising in birdwatching and running guide days use the same hotels in Alcudia year after year. There are so many people who come here with friends or families who only want to spend a short time on birding and here is ideal. Only ten minutes by bus from the port is the famous Albufera Reserve with its many walks and visitors centre and a good all year round reserve but fantastic during migration periods. You also have a couple of really specialised target birds here being the reintroduced Purple Gallinule and Red Knobbed Coot as well as the large population of Moustached Warblers.
The not so well known mountain site La Victoria has traditional species such as Crossbill, Wryneck and Firecrest.
The best reserve these days and much improved is the S’Albufereta made of lagoons, farmland and even some seashore which holds Kentish Plovers. The S’Albufereta we have divided into two as the Can Cuarassa whilst part of the reserve is just in Puerto Pollensa and is now the best place for migrants.
The great thing about staying in Alcudia is there is so much to do for the family be it sunbathing on the beach, walking around the museums or chilling in the squares with the amazing selection cafes and restaurants. The choice of restaurants is truly amazing and includes the El Jardin which holds a Michelin star set in Port Alcudia and in the old town a sensational Italian restaurant called Osteria El Patio.
For leisure time you can spend days exploring the remarkable history and culture of this very significant town. For the ladies there is a fantastic market in the old town twice a week during the morning then relax with a glass of wine in the afternoon sun. On Wednesdays many people catch the bus to the nearby Puerto Pollensa for the market held there and a nice stroll along the sea front and here you have another Michelin Star restaurant the Argos.
An important part of the Islands tourism are the many festivals and fayres and these vary from town to town but worth a look.
